Anthropic has seen a string of milestones: it topped OpenAI in business-spending market share in May, raised $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation at the end of the month, and filed confidential paperwork for an IPO after reporting its first profitable quarter.

That momentum hit a snag when the Trump administration sent a letter demanding non-Americans, including Anthropic employees, be barred from accessing its latest models — the limited-release Mythos 5 and the more widely released Fable 5 — prompting the company to pull the models from the market.

The White House cited an obscure export control directive, though the precise reason remains unclear. Industry chatter suggested hackers had bypassed Fable 5’s guardrails intended to prevent access to Mythos’ capabilities. Anthropic had already limited Mythos because it can find security flaws in code and the company had resisted government use of its models for mass surveillance and fully autonomous weapons.
