Anthropic says Claude may want to see your ID
Anthropic's updated privacy policy says Claude may ask users to verify their age and identity by uploading government-issued documents. The change, published earlier in June and set to take effect on July 8, is presented as a way for users to appeal accounts flagged for potentially fraudulent activity rather than face outright bans.
When triggered, users would be asked to upload a photo scan of a passport or driver’s license and provide a selfie photo or video. The company says it will also create a digitized face geometry template — data some states, including Illinois, treat as protected biometric information — and will keep a record of the verification result, such as whether a user has reached a required age.
Anthropic says the policy update, posted on June 17, applies only to a “small subset of users” whose accounts are flagged but not banned and is intended as part of its appeals process.
