Anthropic to disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after US export-control order
Anthropic said it will disable access to its newest models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, after receiving a US export-control letter citing national security concerns. The company said the notice arrived at around 5:21 p.m. ET and would bar foreign individuals and entities from using the products.
The order covers any foreign national inside or outside the US, including foreign national Anthropic employees, and Anthropic said the "net effect" is to disable the models for everyone to ensure compliance. The company noted the letter did not provide specific details of its national security concern.
Anthropic believes the government's worry centers on a potential method to "jailbreak" Fable 5, but disputed the severity, saying the technique appeared narrow, not universal, and relied on known vulnerabilities that other publicly available models could also reveal.
