Amy Adams has amassed six Academy Award nominations but has not yet won, and her 2005 breakthrough in Junebug remains a defining early performance. That role introduced many of the qualities—comic timing, emotional depth and a scene-stealing presence—that would come to define her career.

Directed by Phil Morrison, Junebug casts Adams as Ashley, a garrulous, pregnant young woman whose sunny exterior hides real anguish. Her turn earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the 78th Academy Awards; she ultimately lost to Rachel Weisz for The Constant Gardener, but Adams is widely remembered as the film’s emotional center.

The story follows painter Madeleine Johnsten (Embeth Davidtz) and her husband George (Alessandro Nivola) when they visit his family in North Carolina. Tension with George’s younger brother Johnny (Ben McKenzie, in his film debut) and Ashley’s conviction that a child will fix her marriage propel the film toward a candid, emotional conclusion.
