Among Us doesn’t seem like the kind of game that could work in single-player, but Innersloth has found a way. At Summer Game Fest I played a hands-on demo of Among Us Story: On Guard, a spinoff that turns the social deduction game into a solo murder mystery. The developer adapts many of Among Us’ familiar elements into a narrative-driven format.

The premise feels almost inevitable: the cast of space-faring beans, a dead body, and one character left to figure out whodunnit. In the demo a corpse is discovered aboard a ship, an emergency meeting convicts my bean, and I had to escape execution by sneaking past crewmates.

From there the goal was to clear my name and uncover the real killer. Design choices repurpose multiplayer mechanics into interactive beats. I opened doors by swiping a key card with the Nintendo Switch 2’s bumper buttons, timed just right. I also crawled through vents that played like a maze from an old PC dungeon crawler.
