Amazon's Seasons, Based on Viral Reddit Story, Casts Lily James

The backrooms concept began as an anonymous image on an image board that Reddit users turned into a horror narrative. Filmmaker Kane Parsons expanded the idea with YouTube shorts, which led to A24's Backrooms and its critical and financial success. Amazon MGM Studios is developing Seasons, with Drew Hancock directing and Lily James starring.

The film adapts a short story by Matt and Harrison Query that originated on Reddit and follows a husband and wife who buy their dream ranch only to discover the land is alive with ancient spirits; survival requires submitting to increasingly disturbing rituals with each turn of the season.

James has made only a few forays into horror, appearing in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016) and Ben Wheatley's 2020 Netflix remake of Rebecca. She is also set to star in a new take on Sylvester Stallone's '90s action thriller Cliffhanger. Hancock's Companion was one of the best-reviewed horror films of 2025 and earned more than triple its $10-million budget, a modest box-office success.
