Alphonso Davies has spoken about the psychological toll of recent setbacks as he races to be fit for Canada’s World Cup opener on June 12. The Bayern Munich full-back is managing a hamstring issue that leaves his involvement for the Group B match against Bosnia-Herzegovina, Qatar and Switzerland in doubt.

Davies clarified his status while stressing recovery is the priority. “The first game is coming up pretty quickly,” he said. “The thing we talked about, me and the coach and the people that were in [a meeting regarding his fitness], I think we understand how important the first game is.

But we understand recovery is always an important thing. If I’m recovering as good as possible, let’s see. If not, then there’s no need to rush, just keep continuing the recovery.” He also pushed back on confusion after a since-deleted interview and trained on his own on Wednesday as part of a tailored rehabilitation programme.
