Alexia Putellas has reached an agreement to join London City Lionesses after leaving Barcelona following 14 trophy-laden years. The two-time Ballon d'Or winner is set to move to the Women's Super League. She had several offers to consider, including from the NWSL, but chose London to remain in Europe and stay close to her home country.

Putellas was also keen to avoid joining another continental heavyweight that would force her to compete regularly against Barcelona. The move aligns with the ambitions of London City Lionesses' owner Michele Kang, who is seeking to turn the club into a force in the Women's Champions League and is planning a state-of-the-art training facility.

The side finished sixth in their debut top-flight campaign and are also closing in on defender Mapi Leon, which would reunite Putellas with a former Barcelona team-mate. Putellas is using the transfer to prepare for the 2027 World Cup and the 2028 Olympic Games, deliberately pushing herself out of her long-term comfort zone.
