After Playing Rayman Legends Retold I'm Happy It's Happening
It’s been a bit since Ubisoft has made a new Rayman game. Rayman Legends Retold is a remake of the last new Rayman game, 2013’s Rayman Legends, and I played it at a private preview ahead of its reveal. I spent about two hours with an unfinished build that included original stages as well as new content, and the game is set to launch in October on consoles and PC.
The remake is a complete, from-the-ground-up 3D remake built in Snowdrop. Character models and the world are 3D, but most of the action remains 2D platforming, so you’re still jumping over enemies, under obstacles, and between platforms. The game adds new voices and cutscenes, an expanded narrative, and new levels and enemies while bringing back the original levels, musical ones, co-op, and mini-games.
The visual change will likely be controversial. In my time with it the 3D visuals looked great in gameplay and even better in cutscenes; at times it felt like watching an unreleased Rayman movie.
