After GTA 6, the 2027 video game lineup already looks stacked
The pace of major releases slowed in recent years as AAA games swelled in scope and development times lengthened. Grand Theft Auto 6 arrives eight years after Rockstar Games' last title, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Playground Games' Fable is nearing the end of a nine-year development cycle.
The pandemic only widened those gaps. Once GTA 6 began to approach release, the industry stirred: Marvel's Wolverine and Gears of War: E-Day jockeyed for position in the months before it, and fears that everything would retreat into its shadow have so far proved unfounded.
Summer Game Fest helped paint a busy picture for 2027, with early entries including Stranger Than Heaven, a Tomb Raider remake, Metro 2039 and Fable, and a spring slate featuring Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the Mass Effect spiritual successor Exodus, a new Spyro and Forza rival Clutch.
