The Adventures of Elliot: The Millenium Tales has received generally favorable reviews, sitting at a 79 average on Metacritic from 20 reviews and an 82 average on OpenCritic with 27 reviews, where 89% of critics recommend it. Prelaunch comparisons to The Legend of Zelda, Octopath Traveler and Final Fantasy helped set high expectations.

Critics consistently praised the combat, dungeons and presentation. Polygon senior gaming editor Jen Glennon called it "an easy game to pick up and a hard one to put down," a "satisfying RPG experience that won't take over your life." IGN's Scott White gave it an 8/10, dubbing it "a great action-adventure game that continues to prove why the HD-2D art style is among the best around." GamesRadar's Luke Kemp awarded it 4.5/5, praising the sense of adventure while noting the writing felt "unambitious." At the same time, many reviewers found the time-travel mechanic underwhelming.
