A24 is developing a live-action Death Stranding movie set in the same timeline as the games, but it won’t retell the source material. The film will introduce new characters in a new corner of Hideo Kojima’s universe, expanding the franchise canon rather than replaying it, a plan first announced in 2022.

The Death Stranding franchise, which began with the 2019 game and grew with the 2025 sequel Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, offers densely layered worldbuilding that feels very different from Fallout’s more straightforward post‑apocalyptic premise. The series shares a taste for dystopia but avoids Fallout’s irreverent quirks, preferring baffling, sometimes intentionally vague rules that invite more questions than answers.

Much of that lore appears outside conventional exposition: cutscenes carry weight, but emails and long conversations do much of the heavy lifting, and the first game’s focus on arduous deliveries was initially polarizing.
