A24 has released some sizeable films in recent years, but its latest release has raced past the studio's previous high-water mark. Everything, Everywhere, All at Once, created by The Daniels, was a 2022 sensation with a near-perfect 93% Rotten Tomatoes score, multiple Oscars and $147 million at the box office against a $14 million budget.

That record did not last long. Based on a YouTube short by Kane Parsons, Backrooms opened in theaters on May 29 and pulled an $81 million domestic opening weekend. Its current worldwide gross sits at $146 million, making it A24's highest-grossing movie of all time after just a week.

Made for roughly $10 million, Backrooms has become an online phenomenon and is being framed as one of the most profitable releases in recent memory, earning over 140% of its budget. The film adapts Parsons' Kane Pixels shorts into an eerie, tense horror picture with sci-fi elements, and it holds an 89% Rotten Tomatoes rating and a 7.1 IMDb score.
