Hyrox mixes one-kilometer running intervals with functional-strength stations, and coach Ixchel Avirama says beginners often stumble on three common errors that sap performance and raise injury risk. First, treating Hyrox like a strength contest overlooks the running: the 1-kilometer segments add up to about five miles, more than half the event.

Avirama recommends running two days a week—one longer, low-intensity Zone 2 session and one shorter interval workout—and building distance gradually to avoid foot, ankle, and knee injuries. Second, neglecting basic movement patterns leaves athletes unprepared for the strength stations.

Mastering exercises such as push-ups, pull-ups, presses, farmer's carries, squats, and lunges helps preserve form when fatigued. Aim for 2 to 3 strength sessions a week, but establish a solid running base before ramping up heavy lifting. Third, poor pacing and fueling derails many competitors.
