There are plenty of reasons to sign up for a big Magic: The Gathering event: testing your skills, practicing for a larger tournament, or simply escaping a heat wave in an air-conditioned hotel. I went to the Marvel Super Heroes showcase — a weekend event organized by Magic Barcelona that included tournaments, cosplay and guest artists — to play the win-a-box Sealed tournament and get Sealed practice ahead of MagicCon: Amsterdam’s Limited Pro Tour qualifier.

My hopes were low after some rough early matches on Magic Arena and a Friday prerelease that felt luck-driven. My first pool on Saturday gave me another black-red Villains deck, and the archetype again felt underwhelming: short on strong early creatures, inconsistent, and light on late-game threats.

I lost the first match, drew the second, then won the third, which gave me a chance to reassess my build. I decided not to stay married to my first deck choice. Tempo decks felt stronger in Marvel Super Heroes Limited, so I rebuilt around early threats and cheap spells.
