The Witcher 3 came out in 2015, and though the RPG remains a beloved classic, a lot has changed in those 11 years. CD Projekt Red fell in and out of the public's good graces with Cyberpunk 2077, Gwent became a full-on game, and Netflix turned Geralt's hair into a meme.

The quietest — and perhaps most meaningful — change for the upcoming Songs of the Past expansion is happening behind the scenes. When The Witcher 3 was made, its core team numbered around 240 people. The game's success (65 million copies sold) and Cyberpunk 2077's performance (35 million copies sold) helped the studio grow: as of February 2026, CD Projekt employed 933 people.

Before The Witcher 3, the company relied largely on GOG for profits, which funded the game's reported $81 million budget and extensive marketing, along with reported crunch that saw employees pulling long hours. CD Projekt no longer owns GOG and now sits on the threshold of being a big-budget studio.
