Why 'Widow's Bay' is the TV phenomenon of the summer
Word of mouth has turned Widow's Bay into a summer sensation. The AppleTV+ horror-comedy stars Matthew Rhys, and while he and co-stars like Kate O'Flynn and Stephen Root are not tabloid-level celebrities, the show's modest cast and lack of overt sex or blockbuster action have not stopped it from catching on.
Set on a fictional New England island, the series blends a Stephen King–like chill with small-town warmth — creator Katie Dippold was a writer on Parks and Recreation. The town has a lighthouse and a tavern called The Salty Whale, but it is cursed: the fog may kill you, the inn is haunted, and a strange ritual led by a lady in an antler headdress looms.
Mayor Tom Loftis is desperate to attract tourists and make the place “the next Martha's Vineyard,” while locals such as Wyck try to warn everyone and are often right. Widow's Bay threads the needle between horror and comedy where many shows stumble, keeping a consistent vision across episodes.
