"Help!" is one of the early Beatles classics that first set them apart. It has an impossibly catchy groove, but the cheery melody and backing vocals often distract from the darker turn of the lyrics. Lennon originally wrote it as a slower ballad, yet the others convinced him to make it a rock track, and it became a hit that still makes you tap your foot.

Listen closely and the song reveals a different tone. Even the title makes it plain to see: John Lennon was struggling. In the lyrics he reflects on how his life "has changed in, oh, so many ways" and asks those close to him to please help him.

Lennon later said the song held a special place for him, telling listeners, "I always liked '[I Am The] Walrus', 'Strawberry Fields', 'Help!', 'In My Life...'" and adding, "Because I meant it. It’s real." He also noted they made the track faster than he originally wrote so it would do better commercially, and that he ended up not liking the recording, but the meaning of the song always carried weight for him.
