I've sailed on more than 50 cruises and learned what’s worth splurging on and what to skip. I rarely book balcony staterooms: they often feel smaller than lounge areas, let in too much morning light, and can carry cigarette smoke or noise from neighbouring balconies.

Leaving the balcony door open for a breeze can create a wind tunnel, so I typically choose a roomy porthole stateroom for privacy and the same sightseeing. All-inclusive drink packages can be tempting, but I’ve found them hard to break even on. Some deluxe packages have been as low as $73 per person per day plus gratuities, and you’d likely need to buy about six pricier alcoholic drinks every day to recoup the cost.

I prefer to pay à la carte and avoid feeling hungover, and I skip specialty cups and branded glassware because they usually go unused at home. There’s no need to pay extra for underwhelming bar snacks when buffets, quick-service eateries, and included dining abound.
