Wardogs is a layered, hardcore FPS that pairs 100-player zone control battles with a cash-focused metagame, skill progression and seasonal resets. CEO Joe Brammer says the game must reward players who invest time while still remaining approachable for those who play casually.

Brammer, who compared Wardogs to Escape From Tarkov but preferred pick-up-and-play shooters like Valorant, summed up the design plainly: "You can't not progress your account," because "progression is cash." At the end of each season cash converts into gold bars that can only be spent on cosmetic skins, meaning skins reflect time and in-game success rather than direct purchases.

Progression and XP are earned through actions, in a system Brammer likens to RuneScape, and players slowly gain proficiency in roles such as medic, sniper and pilot.
