USWNT edge Brazil as Sophia Wilson's deflected goal ends winless run
The U.S. Women’s National Team ended their winless streak against Brazil with a 1-0 victory at Arena Castelão in Fortaleza, grinding out a result in a match defined by pressure, frustration and late chaos. A packed green-and-yellow crowd watched Brazil press aggressively, denying the USWNT time to settle in possession.
Emma Hayes made six changes to the starting XI after the weekend defeat, bringing in Michelle Cooper, Emma Sears, Rose Lavelle, Avery Patterson, Kennedy Wesley and Claudia Dickey, but the Americans still struggled for rhythm through much of the first half. The breakthrough came in the 63rd minute when Sophia Wilson’s effort deflected off Brazil defender Isabela Chagas and was ruled an own goal.
From that point the game grew chippier: yellow cards continued to pile up deep into 13 minutes of stoppage time, and Brazil finished with nine players after red cards to Beatriz Zaneratto Joao and Tarciane. It was far from pretty, but the U.S. showed resilience and held on for the win.
