Upheaval at the Ethereum Foundation sparks mixed reactions
EthLabs launched, and the Ethereum Foundation announced a roughly 40% budget cut and laid off about 20% of its workforce the following day. The moves prompted questions across crypto about the future of Ethereum and the health of one of the network's most influential institutions.
Some observers called it a crisis. "This is a crisis for EF," Stacey Muur wrote on X, arguing cost cuts are often the first step in financial stress. Crypto commentator @TheDeFiPlug added the measures suggested "deeper pressure on EF's spending" and could contribute to further outflows from spot ether exchange-traded funds.
Others saw the changes as a sign of maturation. Joseph Chalom of SharpLink said "Institutional capital is moving onchain now," and pointed to the speed at which "over 50 stakeholders" funded EthLabs as evidence of conviction. Anatoly Yakovenko of Solana wrote "Bullish, fr," and argued a smaller, leaner foundation could become more decisive.
