Tuchel's England deal includes World Cup break clause, Euro 2028 not guaranteed
Thomas Tuchel’s contract extension with England was billed as carrying him through to Euro 2028, but the Football Association has built in performance safeguards tied to this summer’s World Cup. The FA says the manager’s two-year extension agreed in February could be cut short if the team underperforms in North America.
FA chief executive Mark Bullingham confirmed the presence of “performance clauses” that would allow the governing body to make a change if the campaign ends in failure. “There's performance clauses in every single contract at the FA, but I'm not going into any detail of what they are,” he said while at the team’s base in Kansas City.
The FA promoted the renewal ahead of the tournament to limit distractions and to avoid leaving a sought-after manager on the market. Bullingham argued that Tuchel is a “top-level manager who would be in demand” and said the association wanted someone who has “been there and done it” for a home tournament like Euro 2028.
