Trump privately signs scaled-back AI order shortening review to 30 days
President Donald Trump on Tuesday privately signed a scaled-back executive order that gives AI and tech companies a brief window to let the federal government voluntarily review AI models. The order, issued after repeated federal conversations with leading AI firms including Anthropic, would allow frontier model makers to provide access to models with advanced cyber capabilities up to 30 days before public release.
A previous draft called for review periods of up to 90 days; the new order stresses the reviews are voluntary. Anthropic said in April it limited the release of its Claude Mythos model over concerns the system was too adept at finding software and cybersecurity vulnerabilities.
The company has confidentially filed for an IPO and said last week it would soon release Mythos-level models to customers; a spokesperson did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Trump had delayed signing the order amid concerns it could stifle US-led AI innovations.
