Three daring sequences made Schwarzenegger’s Eraser a '90s action standout
To mark its 30th anniversary and new 4K Blu-ray release, director Chuck Russell has been revisiting Eraser and the choices that set it apart from other Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicles. Russell had been developing a different project when Schwarzenegger brought him the Eraser script; he called it “a wonderful script” and set out to add elements he’d never seen in an Arnold movie, shifting the star toward a protector role rather than a destroyer.
One of Russell’s signature ideas was a miniaturized railgun. After learning railguns existed only as massive naval weapons, he imagined shrinking the concept so “a single man could carry a weapon that destructive,” even picturing Schwarzenegger carrying two in the final climax.
He pushed the design into “hyper-reality,” with glowing projectile trails, and later received a quiet compliment from someone connected to Naval Intelligence for getting the technology surprisingly right.
