Thief: The Dark Project Remastered aims to revive classic stealth gameplay
Nightdive Studios is remastering Thief: The Dark Project, one of the most influential immersive sims. The original 1998 game set a standard for sneaking in darkness and using the environment to evade or defeat enemies, while the series itself has spent years confined to underwhelming reboots and VR experiments.
With no new Dishonored on the horizon, this remake offers a chance to reconnect players with the first-person stealth sandbox it helped inspire. At Summer Game Fest, a hands-on demo covered the first post-tutorial level, “Lord Bafford’s Manor,” in which Garrett must slip into the manor and steal a jeweled scepter.
The level design still teaches through play: put out torches with water arrows, avoid noisy floors, and explore routes off the beaten path. That design continues to reward improvisation and unconventional approaches, underscoring how the game’s sandbox still holds up nearly three decades later.
