The return of the bridal suit: will Dua Lipa’s look change the face of weddings?
Fifty five years after Bianca Jagger wore a Yves Saint Laurent skirt-suit to marry Mick Jagger, the alternative bridal look has been embraced by a new generation. On Sunday Dua Lipa became the latest high-profile proponent when she married Callum Turner in an intimate ceremony at Old Marylebone town hall; photographs showed the couple grinning under a flurry of confetti, Turner in a navy suit and Lipa in an ivory skirt suit topped with a wide-brimmed hat.
The reference to Jagger has appeared repeatedly over the decades. Amal Clooney nodded to it in a white Stella McCartney co-ord and floppy hat in 2014, while Emily Ratajkowski’s mustard Zara suit and veiled brown hat for her 2018 wedding echoed the look. At the time Jagger’s Le Smoking jacket — worn with nothing underneath, a bias-cut skirt to conceal a pregnancy and a giant sunhat — was considered the epitome of rock’n’roll rebellion; a skirt suit instead of a dress, especially with a plunging neckline, caused scandal when Saint Laurent first introduced it.
