Supergirl's Box Office Opens Below Expectations as Toy Story 5 Leads
Supergirl opens in theaters worldwide this weekend, giving Milly Alcock her first leading credit as Kara Zor-El after a cameo at the end of 2025's Superman. Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, the film draws on Tom King's Woman of Tomorrow and follows Kara on an intergalactic quest for vengeance after her 23rd birthday.
Early reviews have been mixed, with a 62% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes before the premiere. Alcock and Jason Momoa (as Lobo) have earned praise, while critics and fans have flagged clunky pacing, subpar CGI and an overly dark tone. Those reactions appear to be affecting ticket sales: Supergirl earned $7.8 million in domestic previews and $13 million globally on Thursday night, and is projected to gross $47–50 million over the weekend.
That projection would leave Supergirl well behind Disney and Pixar's Toy Story 5, which is expected to take $80–90 million in its second weekend after a $312 million global opening ($160 million domestically) last week.
