Spielberg says his wife insisted on a 9-to-5 rule for DreamWorks
Steven Spielberg, 79, said balancing family life with filmmaking was difficult during a conversation on the IMO podcast with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson. He added, 'One of the biggest challenges is just running out of excuses why I can't get home for dinner.' Spielberg married actor Kate Capshaw in 1991.
Together they raised seven children: four they had together, his son from a previous marriage, and Capshaw's two older children. When he considered joining David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg to launch DreamWorks, Capshaw set one condition: he had to be home every night by 6 — 5:45 was better — to have dinner with the family.
Spielberg said he made a 9-to-5 schedule for running the studio a requirement, unless he was shooting and needed to rise early. He has previously described putting parenting ahead of some career opportunities.
