Spielberg says he was twice turned down to direct James Bond
Steven Spielberg told a podcast that he was refused twice when he approached the producers of the James Bond films, and quipped that today they “can’t afford me.” He said he first called Albert “Cubby” Broccoli after the success of Jaws, offering to direct because he had “always wanted to make a James Bond film from the day I saw Dr No.” Broccoli declined, Spielberg recalled, and moved on.
After Close Encounters became a hit, Broccoli rang back to request use of its five‑tone musical motif for Moonraker. Spielberg said he offered a deal — “I’ll make you a deal. I’ll give you permission to use the five notes if you let me direct a Bond film” — but was turned down again and allowed the notes to be used anyway.
