SpaceX's unorthodox decision to fix its IPO pricing ahead of time sapped much of the usual excitement, but the offering is unlikely to stay predictable. The company offered an unprecedented chunk of shares to retail investors, and their presence promises the volatility and chaos day traders typically bring to big debuts.

At a set price of $135 per share, SpaceX will command a $1.8 trillion post-IPO valuation, topping Saudi Aramco's $1.7 trillion mark. Retail investors submitted about $100 billion in share orders, while the deal will raise roughly $75 billion — by far the largest IPO haul ever.

BlackRock placed a $5 billion order, nearly matching Cerebras's $5.55 billion, the previous biggest IPO of 2026. SpaceX allocated an unusually large 30% of its IPO shares to retail, and Fidelity lowered its minimum account threshold to let more buyers in. That dynamic has raised the familiar question of whether retail enthusiasm signals a new era of day-trader euphoria or leaves "dumb money" holding the bag for institutions.
