Sophie Turner stars in Prime Video heist Steal and reflects on Game of Thrones career
Sophie Turner is the lead in Steal, a tense Prime Video drama about a corporate heist in which she plays office worker–turned action hero Zara Dunne. The series, written by novelist Sotiris Nikias (who writes crime under the pseudonym Ray Celestin), is on Prime Video from Wednesday 21 January.
Steal is described as white-knuckle and alarmingly paced, with villains that move “like hornets” and a mood of deliberate, chaotic menace. Turner’s Zara is portrayed as more than a damsel in distress—she carries “a lot of rage and sorrow” rooted in having grown up with an alcoholic, abusive mother—and Turner says much of her work on the show is improvised in the moment.
The director used a cat-and-mouse approach on set, including elaborate prosthetics for the villains and surprise first takes to elicit genuine reactions. Turner reflected on her career arc, from being cast in Game of Thrones at 13 and learning to act on that set to playing Jean Grey in the X-Men films and then taking a break to have two children.
She said early seasons of Game of Thrones left her feeling self‑conscious—“very embarrassing,” she said—and that she has had to separate herself from typecast offers since the show ended. She moved to the US after getting engaged at 21, had children at 24 and 26, and returned to the UK after she and Joe Jonas divorced two years ago; she describes Steal, filmed in east London, as something of a homecoming.
