ScottishPower sent a debt collection letter demanding £130 on my late brother’s gas account even though I am his sole executor and had informed it of his death. The company owed a £430 credit on his electricity account but paid it with a cheque in his name that could not be cashed; after many emails it reissued the cheque again in his name and said a third cheque would take four weeks to "manually" process.

Since then I have been sent four more cheques all in his name, and ScottishPower has told me the electricity account will be closed as there is no credit left and has stopped replying to my emails. Other grieving relatives have described similar failures. BR of Fife was sent a cheque for the £312 credit on his late mother’s dual-fuel account made out to her, while also receiving a bill in her name for £191, a letter declaring the account clear, and a letter promising a £60 refund that was never sent.

In emails to ScottishPower he was addressed variously as 'Dear undefined' and 'Dear Customers Name'.
