Russell T. Davies Leaves Doctor Who, 2026 Christmas Special Canceled
Russell T. Davies has announced he is stepping down as showrunner for a second time and is taking his Bad Wolf production company with him. That decision means the promised 2026 Christmas special will not happen and the cliffhanger that closed 2025’s season will remain unresolved as the BBC puts the show out to tender.
The 2025, eight-episode season starred Ncuti Gatwa and ended with the Doctor dying and regenerating into the form of Billie Piper, a turn that puzzled both die-hard fans and casual viewers. That mystery, the announcement says, will now continue to go unexplained for at least another year, if not forever.
Recent runs had been co-funded with Disney, which picked up episodes for Disney+ and partnered on production, but the new output proved unpopular and an extended deal was abandoned. With Davies and Bad Wolf departing, the BBC is left seeking a new production partner for an expensive, effects-driven show that has seen falling UK audiences and shifted its international streaming home to AMC+.
