Ronaldo and Portugal wear Diogo Jota tribute wristbands in training
Portugal's players paid tribute to their late teammate Diogo Jota by wearing commemorative wristbands during training in Miami. Cristiano Ronaldo and other members of the Selecao were photographed wearing the bands as they prepare for the World Cup, starting with their Group K opener against DR Congo next week.
The wristbands were a personal gift from Prime Minister Luis Montenegro after a meeting with the squad. Vitinha said the bands were made to comply with FIFA on-pitch rules, include the names of all the players plus Jota's name, and that the team chose to wear them with affection, whether during the day or in matches.
Manager Roberto Martinez has spoken about Jota's influence on the group's mentality. Jota, who earned 49 caps and scored 14 goals for Portugal, was described as 'our light' and a reference point for the belief and tenacity Martinez says the team aims to channel through the tournament.
