Sugar's electrifying Season 1 twist — that John Sugar is an extraterrestrial taking human form to study Earth — opened bold possibilities, but Season 2 largely loses that momentum. The once-shadowy, suspenseful tone gives way to a more standard procedural feel, and the premise feels like a missed storytelling opportunity as the alien aspect fades to the background.

Colin Farrell still does a fine job portraying this otherworldly being trying to fit in, his soft-spoken, genuinely kind demeanor remaining a core strength. Writing choices, however, leave the character drained of personality, and while Tony Dalton, Jin Ha, and Raymond Lee provide notable work, many supporting roles feel forgettable.

The series leans on Dexter-style inner narration, black-and-white flashbacks, and attempts to reach others of his kind, but those elements grow repetitive and underused. Episodes are short and easy to get through, yet the main case often plays like filler until a late expansion that feels like set-up for another season.
