The Dark Knight Rises has long been viewed as the weakest entry in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Its departures from the comics drew heavy criticism: Bane was stripped of much of his intellect, lacked his signature Venom, and his action scenes often felt restrained.

An R-rated animated adaptation, the Batman: Knightfall Trilogy, now offers an opportunity to address those shortcomings. Freed from Nolan’s hyperrealistic constraints and two-hour limits, animation and the R rating could depict Bane as the cold, calculating mastermind who uses Venom to become an intimidating, bone-crushing threat.

The three-film format also allows fuller treatment of Jean-Paul Valley’s Azrael storyline, which shows how a legacy taken up by another vigilante can spiral into dangerous violence. That arc and other elements Nolan couldn’t explore have room to breathe across multiple entries.
