Quantum computing promises major advances and fresh risks. Powerful systems will execute in hours or minutes what once took years, and these advances are coming soon to an enterprise near you. IT professionals now face tough choices as they consider, explore, or even begin preparing for the looming quantum revolution — along with hard deadlines.

At least two dozen manufacturers are now commercially offering more than 40 quantum processing units (QPUs), and a "quantum-as-a-service" model is widening access, MIT's Quantum Index Report says. Still, QPUs do not yet meet requirements for running large-scale commercial applications such as chemical simulations or cryptanalysis.

The IBM Institute for Business Value adds that we are not yet at the point when quantum can outperform classical computers alone, and that adapting operations, infrastructure, and partnerships is a prerequisite for preparing for a quantum future. Security demands action now.
