There has been more Batman content than for any other superhero, and Prime Video’s Batman: Caped Crusader offers a radical new take that returns the character to his 1940s–60s roots. Developed by Bruce Timm and set in a fresh timeline, it follows a young Bruce Wayne (voiced by Hamish Linklater) in the early stages of becoming a crimefighter.

While familiar faces like the Penguin (Minnie Driver) and Catwoman (Christina Ricci) crop up, the show frames Batman’s main battle as the institutional corruption within Gotham’s police and political system. The series embraces noir not just in art style but in mood, hardboiled mysteries, and paranoid suspense.

Its serialized plot centers on Batman’s effort to dismantle the mob led by politician Rupert Thorne (Cedric Yarbrough), treating classic villains as symptoms of broader rot. At the same time the show explores the cost of vigilantism, with Harvey Bullock (John DiMaggio) emerging as a sadistic rival who seeks to unmask the Caped Crusader for personal glory.
