Post your questions for Martha Reeves
Martha Reeves, one of the defining voices of 1960s pop, is 84 and preparing to release a new album — her first in 22 years. To mark the occasion, she will join us to answer your questions. Born in Alabama and raised in Detroit, Reeves began at Motown doing administrative work and singing backing vocals for Marvin Gaye before getting her shot as a lead artist in 1962 with Martha and the Vandellas.
Their second single, Come and Get These Memories, was a hit and their third, Heat Wave, was a smash; it kicked off a run of lovestruck songs including Jimmy Mack, I’m Ready for Love and Nowhere to Run. Dancing in the Street, meanwhile, became both a euphoric paean to dance and a rallying call for protesters during the civil rights movement.
The group wound down in 1973, but Reeves went on to record five solo albums, act on Broadway and continue performing live. She has now returned to the recording studio for Searching, a title she told Rolling Stone 'represents hope for the future in all things'.
