The biggest World Cup ever will mean more watching parties around the world. With 48 countries competing, global cuisine is an easy way to move beyond crisps and lager and serve something more adventurous to friends and family. Football is full of rituals — from fans wearing “lucky pants” to putting the name of an opposing team in the freezer — and eating and drinking are part of that.

In countries where alcohol is prohibited, tea and traditional sweets provide the social lubrication; South American fixtures are often churrasco barbecues with chimichurri, while places with strong café cultures favour baked goods and strong espresso, even at 3am.

Staying in looks set to be popular in the UK: a OnePoll survey of 2,000 adults for Jacob’s found 73% plan to shun the pub and 57% will get in food and drinks for the match. Chef James Knappett says: "We love to eat and we love to watch football – what could be better than doing them both together?
