Owlcat Removes PC Launcher After Fan Backlash
Owlcat Games announced on Monday, June 22 that it would release a PC launcher for all its games, bringing news, patches and add-ons into a single client. The studio said the launcher would be optional, require no mandatory registration and invited feedback. Less than 24 hours later it posted three sentences rolling the launcher back: "Lord Captains, we hear you and we are rolling back the launcher.
The game will now revert to the previous patch, completely removing any Launcher-related changes. Thank you for your feedback, and genuinely sorry for the frustration caused." Many players reacted negatively, in part because new launchers often clash with Steam's ubiquity and some say they will not buy games tied to unfamiliar storefronts.
Reported problems included Rogue Trader failing to launch through the client, the launcher consuming extra processing power, and the client continuing to run in the background even when disabled unless users changed executable commands.
