Netflix's War Machine is now one of its biggest films
Netflix's War Machine is now among the streamer’s top 10 original films. The sci‑fi action movie, released in March and directed by Patrick Hughes, began life at Lionsgate and reportedly cost around $80 million. After a weak theatrical showing in Australia, Netflix acquired international rights and brought the film to a much wider audience.
On the platform, War Machine debuted atop global rankings, reached the Top 10 in more than 90 countries and amassed over 118 million views, earning a place in Netflix’s all‑time Top 10 alongside Red Notice and The Gray Man. The premise is deliberately simple and evokes an ’80s sensibility: a group of Army Ranger candidates see their final training exercise go catastrophically wrong when they encounter an enormous extraterrestrial machine capable of horrifying destruction.
The story shifts from military survival thriller into sci‑fi spectacle, keeping momentum with early action and minimal exposition.
