Moffat offers explanation for Jack Harkness' missing memories
In a recent improv segment posted to the official Doctor Who Instagram page, Steven Moffat offered an explanation for what happened during Captain Jack Harkness' two years of missing memories, a question dating back to Jack's debut in 2005's "The Empty Child." Drawing ingredients at random, Moffat fashioned a short multi-Doctor tale: Davros travels to 51st-century London to acquire a Vortex Manipulator from the Time Agency, abducts Jack and seizes his wrist device.
The Eleventh Doctor learns of the abduction, arranges for his Fourth incarnation to join the rescue, and involves Amy Pond to help stop Davros, recover the Manipulator and free Jack. Moffat then implies the Doctor erases Jack's memories after his rescue to spare him the trauma of two years imprisoned by Davros.
While not presented as formal canon, the idea provides a tidy explanation from the show's former showrunner.
