Modric fired up for England clash, dodges retirement question
Luka Modric has sent a defiant message ahead of Croatia's World Cup opener against England, insisting his side does not fear anyone. The AC Milan midfielder, appearing in his fifth global tournament, said personal milestones and contract talks are secondary as he focuses on the national team.
Modric acknowledged that his Milan contract expires this summer, with an option to extend for another 12 months, and it has been reported that he will retire after the World Cup. He declined to discuss his future, saying: "I'm focused exclusively on the tournament because I want to help the team in the best possible way." On the England matchup, Modric called the Three Lions the heavyweight of the group but rejected any suggestion Croatia would be intimidated.
"We respect everyone, but we're not afraid of anyone. Now it's up to us to prove it on the pitch. We want to make all Croatians proud," he said, adding that the squad's experience gives them an edge.
