DMZ returns in Modern Warfare 4 as a fuller, more polished mode after a modest debut in Modern Warfare 2. Multiplayer creative director Geoffrey Smith said Infinity Ward "had a bit more time" and built what it calls a proper DMZ that plays like a game within a game and can compete with extraction titles such as Arc Raiders.

The mode is set on an enormous map centered on Hajin — a South Korean exclusion zone created by a nuclear reactor meltdown — with smaller sections in Russia and North Korea. That event follows the Modern Warfare 4 campaign, making DMZ part of the same universe, and the team emphasises discovery, exploration and "telling stories through the environment" so the map acts like a character.

There are three ways to play: story missions, dynamic operations and free roam. Story missions pair most players and squads on objectives like searching a vault, abducting an injured general or infiltrating an active military base.
