Mike Flanagan’s Exorcist reboot set for March 12, 2027
Movieweb reports Universal Pictures has set Mike Flanagan's reboot of The Exorcist for release on Mar. 12, 2027, according to Variety.
The film will star Scarlett Johansson and Noah Jupe, with Flanagan writing, directing and producing for Universal Pictures and Atomic Monster‑Blumhouse Pictures. The reboot had originally been scheduled for Mar. 13, 2026 but production was delayed; few plot details have been released, though the project has been described as a dramatic reimagining. Johansson reportedly turned down the role of Mother Gothel in Disney's upcoming Tangled remake to star in both The Exorcist and The Batman - Part II.
Universal had paid $400 million for distribution rights to a new Exorcist trilogy after 2023's The Exorcist: Believer, which opened Oct. 6, 2023, grossed $137 million worldwide against a $30 million budget and was widely panned. A sequel, The Exorcist: Deceiver, was set for Apr. 18, 2025 but was put on hold; in May 2024 Flanagan was brought in to revamp the franchise, scrapping the studio's original trilogy plans and foregoing a chance to direct DC Studios' Clayface. The new release will open against Sony's animated Buds and follows a crowded March 2027 schedule that includes Pixar's Gatto, Amazon MGM's remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 on Mar. 19, and late‑March arrivals Godzilla X Kong: Supernova and The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One.
