Michael has become Lionsgate's highest-grossing movie, eclipsing The Hunger Games and Twilight with $855 million worldwide and $345 million domestically. The film now stands ahead of Christopher Nolan's Inception, which grossed $828 million globally and $292 million at the domestic box office.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua and led by Jaafar Jackson, Michael features Colman Domingo, Nia Long, Mike Myers, Miles Teller, and Laura Harrier. Critical reaction has been mixed — the film holds a 39% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus noting that it "mostly plays like a 'greatest hits' album that could've benefited from including liner notes to give actual insight into the icon" — while audiences have responded enthusiastically, giving it a 97% user score.

The movie's third act, which would have focused on allegations against the singer, was cut for legal reasons, and those allegations were then positioned to be the focal point of a second film.
