Kurt Russell said there were "difficulties between Michelle and [Robert], in all honesty" while speaking at an FYC event. He added, "I was a bit of a go-between as it were," and that "because of that," he and Pfeiffer "had a strong relationship." The 1988 movie, written and directed by Towne, follows two childhood friends played by Russell and Mel Gibson who become entangled in a tense love triangle with a restaurateur played by Pfeiffer.

Russell called Pfeiffer’s character, Jo Ann Vallenari, "the glue" of everything and said "Michelle was becoming a major player, and she was a rising star and all of that." He remembered she was, he felt, "really, really right for [the role]." Pfeiffer said she "fell in love" with Russell when they first met and that he "showed up to support" her "every day." She has also described him as "my protector, my confidant, my court jester," saying he brought joy to the set and that their chemistry was effortless.
