Krypton: a Game-of-Thrones-style sci-fi that works as a Supergirl prequel
James Gunn has built the new DCU around the Superman mythos, with the first two films focusing heavily on the House of El and Krypton's history. Before the DCU brought Brainiac to theaters and Jason Momoa played Lobo in Supergirl, Syfy aired Krypton, a prequel set roughly 200 years before Superman’s birth that gave both characters early live-action treatments.
The series centers on Seg-El, Superman’s grandfather, after the House of El has been expelled from Kryptonian high society. Seg fights to restore his family’s name while Adam Strange arrives from the future to warn that Brainiac has traveled back in time to subvert Krypton’s ruling class.
Krypton ran for 20 episodes across two seasons before being canceled in 2019 and was originally conceived as a Man of Steel prequel linked to the DCEU. Krypton drew on disparate elements of Superman lore to build a political sci-fi drama, and that approach invited comparisons to Game of Thrones.
